Have you decided to create a website? Start with a website strategy plan before you register a domain name. Many people make the mistake of buying a domain before they have started to design their web site.
1. Planning your web site
Decide what the theme of your web site will be. An informational site, personal, generating money? Maybe all of those wrapped into one. Be creative.
2. Finding a Website Niche
A niche is an area of the market you will be targeting. Finding a profitable niche website idea may take time. What do you like to do? What are you passionate about? Do you have a hobby? Make a list of 3 or 4 niche ideas. If your hobby is fishing, narrow your theme down to bass fishing, fly fishing or ice fishing (or something else within that theme).
Look at each theme and think about the different pages you could write about. Would the concept be to limited? If you would be able to only write a few pages, it may be to narrow of a theme.
Research for keywords on each of the themes to see if one may be more profitable.
3. Choose Web Design Software
If you have a limited budget, use Nvu to help build your site. You don’t even have to know HTML as it is a wysiwyg web builder. There are many free templates online for free to use for you site. If you do have a budget for a website builder program, there are many to choose from.
4. Design Web Pages
This will also take planning on your part. Start with the homepage then start with just 2 or 3 pages. Your new site does not need a large number of pages to go “live”. More pages can be added to your site once you fully learn your design software. Take a look at your favorite sites. Look at the design, colors, navigation. What do you like? Can you make it more visitor friendly? Fill with relevant content to your theme.
5. Choose Web Host
There are many affordable web hosting companies. Shop around. Your first web hosting plan does not need all the bells and whistles. Start out with a basic package and later when you decide you need more space, upgrade the plan.
6. Register Domain Name
While you are looking at web hosting, see what offers (if any) they have for buying a domain name. Many hosting companies will include a free domain for life as long as you stay with them for hosting.
7. Going Live
You are now able to go live with your creation. If you have never uploaded to the internet, take the time to read the instructions with your hosting company. Most of them have very good tutorials, written and video to help you.
You may also be able to use your web design software program, as many already have the FTP (file transfer protocol) built into it. You just need to set it up with your information.
8. Generate Traffic
Ok, now you need to get visitors to your web site. Submit your sitemap to Google, Yahoo and MSN. If the site has good original content, submit your site a website directory.
These are the basic steps in creating a web site. Create a website you can be proud of. Take your time, be creative and most of all, have fun with it!
