Now, let’s proceed with today’s lesson: Training Tip #3: Writing a Business Plan
Today, let’s discuss how to write a business plan for your home-based business. Let me begin by saying, the whole point of starting a business from home is to reduce your start up costs. Therefore, we won’t be addressing the need for bank loans, as we examine the three simple steps for learning to write a bootrapped business plan.
Step 1: Start With a Free Online Course.
Learn the components of successful business planning by taking advantage of a free online course. Keep in mind, a business plan should include your marketing plan, funding plan and operating plan. Everything you need to start, manage and grow a successful business should be clearly spelled out in your plan. It’s like the skeletal structure for your new baby business.
Learn everything you need to know, by taking a free business plan writing course from the SBA at: http://web.sba.gov/sbtn/registration/index.cfm?CourseId=27.
Step 2: Work out a Funding Strategy.
Writing a business plan will help you to determine how much start up money you’ll need to get your home business up and running. Once you’ve researched how much money it will take to get started, how will you raise the money? My answer is bootstrapping. Bootstrapping enables you to start a business without borrowing from banks, family and friends or racking up credit card debt. We’ll discuss this in more detail later.
Step 3: Write Out your Plan.
Now it’s time to put all that you’ve learned in the free course on paper. This will include your marketing plan and funding strategy. A bootstrapped plan doesn’t need to be fancy. You can write it out on notebook paper and keep in a pocket folder, or get formal and lay it out using a free template. The choice is up to you – but be sure to do what you’re most comfortable with. Don’t waste a lot of time on how it looks. If it looks anything like mine, it’s rather simple. I have my bootstrapped business plan in a three ring binder.
