To start, let us define social media first. According to some sources in the net, social media are media for social interaction, using highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques. It uses web-based technologies to transform and broadcast media monologues into social-media dialogues.

To most people, when the words social media are mentioned, Facebook, Twitter and the likes come to mind. So where does marketing comes in when using those aforementioned sites?

When doing marketing, one of few things you have to think is finding a right tool or medium to promote your stuff. And what is more effective than shouting your stuff on Facebook or tweeting it on Twitter!

Social media marketing (SMM) is quickly becoming the most popular way of branding and selling your product or service on the web and there are lots of advantages on it.

One of them is having a widely diverse audience. Everyday, millions (and counting) of people around the world signs up and logs in on their FB or Twitter accounts and spends 10 minutes, at least, their time in it. Every site or business that wants to expand and become profitable, needs a core group of supporters who will be willing to make purchases or recommend your business to others. The more supporters you have, the faster word spreads about your business.

Another thing with SMM is that, it is cost-effective. Since signing up on those social media sites is free, you don’t have to worry about paying some ad agencies to run some ads of your products. If done by your self, costs are limited to only time and perhaps the expenses involved in hiring a freelance programmer/designer.

With the advent of internet and high-tech gadgets, SMM is becoming one of the commonly used marketing tactics that are now also adopted by big companies. Why not? It only requires minimal efforts but has maximum results.
